The Kesennuma Classic (Day Tour)

Start your day at Kesennuma Fish Market (8:30 am)

Kesennuma is one of Japan’s 13 National Fishing Ports, so life here starts and ends at the market. Come here and understand what drives this city.

The guided tour of the Kesennuma Fish Market is a must for first time visitors to the city.   In the winter you can see rows upon rows of swordfish being lined up to auction, and in the summer and fall you can see skipjack tuna (bonito) being offloaded from the boats. Upon request, I can prepare a sample of sashimi made from the fresh catch of the morning.

Take a walk around port

Kesennuma Port is home to ships coming from all around the world. Learn how the port was impacted by the Tohoku tsunami, and how it has roared back to life in the years after.

A Story of Craftsmanship and Inspiration

Otokoyama Honten is a local sake brewery with over 100 years of history. A brewery tour will give you insight, not only into their dedication to the craft, but also into how the sake made here is symbolic of Kesennuma’s recovery.

The sake brewing season is from October to April, so if you’re visiting during this time, you can see the brewers at work! Even if you’re not visiting during brewing season, you can still tour the facility and sample different varieties of sake. Otokoyama Honten was featured on a Discovery Channel documentary by Ken Watanabe.

Lunch(12:00 pm)

World-class sushi, prepared with fish fresh from the market. What could be better? Master Chef Kato will tell you all about what makes Kesennuma sushi special.

If you’re interested, Yuuzushi also offers a sushi-making workshop. (A separate reservation is required for this.)
